The Governors' Vote On 8th March 2012, the Full Governing Body met and voted on the question of whether Sudbourne should convert to Academy status or stay as a Community School. The Governors voted against conversion.
One of the major factors in the governors' decision was the overwhelming opposition to the proposal from parents and staff in the consultation. We feel this response truly reflects Sudbourne's community ethos, and validates its continuing status as a Community School. The governors are grateful to all the respondents for the many considered views we received.
The governors do not take this decision lightly. We are keenly aware that with the coming budget constraints, the school may face significant cuts, and these may be made worse by our collective decision to reject academy status for the present. While we intend to review this decision over the next years and as developments unfold, we also hope the school community will recognise its collective responsibility to support the school through what may be a difficult time. One respondent to the consultation wrote "We need to draw on the committed, able, diverse community of our school. Creative, broad thinking needs to be employed to manage the challenges we will face." It is in the spirit of this kind of thinking that we hope we will all support Sudbourne's management and staff to continue their outstanding work. We look forward to your continuing support and input.
The Consultation Process During the consultation:
Parents were given both brief and in depth information, governors spoke to parents on the school gates for two weeks, and a public debate was held (see below).
Staff had two separate meetings and ballots with Unions representatives.
Leaflets were distributed to residents and tenants associations in the area, leaflets were distributed through shops and local facilities in the area, and a governor spoke to the local Brixton Blog.
A paper response-form was distributed and an email address publicised.
Academy Consultation Meeting, 3rd February On 3rd February, the governors hosted a meeting for parents/carers, staff and community to hear a range of views on the question of Sudbourne converting to Academy Status. Mr Stevanovic, John Wentworth (Headteacher, Corpus Christi), Farquhar McKay (Lambeth LA), Alasdair Smith (Anti-Academies Alliance) and Nick Morrissey (Strictly Education) all gave presentations. The meeting was well attended and a good discussion of the issues took place.
